Shakopee is set to take center stage as it hosts Hockey Day Minnesota 2025 from January 22 to 25. Since its inception in 2007, Hockey Day Minnesota has celebrated Minnesota’s deep connection to the sport of hockey. Highlighting why Minnesota is proudly known as "The State of Hockey."
This year’s event will be held at Valleyfair, transforming the popular amusement park into an outdoor hockey paradise. If the weather cooperates, Valleyfair will operate a handful of rides within the Route 76 area of the park.
According to Hockey Day Minnesota 2025 vice-chair Eric Radtke, this will be the first time in Hockey Day’s nineteen-year history that the host site will be at a privately owned venue. “This is a unique opportunity to highlight an iconic business, Valley Fair,” Radtke said. “In its 50-year history, Valleyfair has never opened in the winter. We’re on new ground for Hockey Day.”
Shakopee’s hosting of Hockey Day Minnesota is about more than just hockey; it’s a unique opportunity to showcase the city. From youth groups to local businesses, the event will engage the entire community, providing an economic boost while putting Shakopee in the spotlight.
A Community Effort
Behind the scenes, the Hockey Day Minnesota board, led by local Co-Chairs Stacey Langemo and Josh Flom, is working to deliver a Shakopee-specific experience. The board collaborates closely with the Minnesota Wild and FanDuel Sports Network to ensure the event aligns with the traditions of Hockey Day while reflecting Shakopee’s unique identity.
Proceeds from Hockey Day Minnesota 2025 will support the Shakopee Youth Hockey Association, the Shakopee High School hockey program, and various community initiatives. Organizers are calling on the entire community to participate, whether through volunteering, attending the event, or supporting local businesses.
Excitement Builds Around Game Matchups
Game matchups include Girls and Boys high school teams, an NCAA women’s hockey game between the University of Minnesota and Bemidji State, and a Saturday evening Minnesota Wild vs. Calgary Flames game. The Wild game will be played at Xcel Energy Center. All other games will be played at Valley Fair in Shakopee.
The Shakopee Girls Hockey team will be taking on Brainerd Thursday, and the boys will be playing Maple Grove on Saturday. The complete game schedule can be found here.
More Than Hockey
Although hockey is the star of the event, Hockey Day Minnesota 2025 promises a lineup of activities that appeal to all ages. From outdoor games to live concerts and community festivities, the four-day celebration is expected to attract over 15,000 visitors.
Whether you’re a lifelong hockey fan or new to the sport, this event will offer something for everyone. It’s a chance for Shakopee to come together, celebrate its community, and show why Minnesota truly is "The State of Hockey."
